WHAT MAKES A GOOD BD - REPOST FROM CAREER DISCUSSION CHANNEL
Back around 2010-12 I started getting a lot of search requests to find EMS BDs. After the Great Recession EMS executives were ready to take the chance, and invest in getting new business. Of course, if they didn't, they were taking the chance, actually assuring, that they would lose out. Grow or die.
Q1: How would you describe the EMS BD market in 2026?
BD WORKED
From 2010-2017 BDs were most of the EMS searches I did. Finally, they started hiring SMT Engineers, the most critical first hires for pcba. Now, almost a decade later every position is in demand!
Q2: How does this line up with your obseervations?
WHAT MAKES AN EMS BD
EMS experience is critical of course. The EMS sales cycle is usually long. People who sell components or other things that turn quickly don't have the stomach for taking 6-18 months to get an RFQ and more time to get to launch. On the other hand, people without pcb assembly sales experience don't typically bring the key knowledge to the customer and sales process.
Q2: What do you think it takes to become success as an EMS BDM?
Q4: Did you come from outside of EMS PCBA and succeed in it? Or try it and it doesn't work for you? Share your experience, or observations on the topic.

CREATE YOUR PROFESSIONAL PITCH: INTERVIEW
"Act as an expert career coach, industry interviewer, and copywriter. You are going to help me write a compelling personal introduction for a community group of Electronics Manufacturing professionals and suppliers.
Please ask me the following 8 questions one at a time. Wait for my answer to each question before asking the next one. Do not rush. Once I have answered all questions, combine my responses into an engaging, high-impact introduction paragraph under 175 words.
Here are the questions to ask me one by one:
What is your full name, where do you live (City/Country), and what company do you work for? (If you are currently 'open to work' or available immediately, please state that instead.)
What makes you uniquely great at what you do, and what part of your job do you love the most?
If members of this group were to approach you for your technical expertise, what specific topic would it be? (e.g., SMT processes, supply chain resilience, component sourcing, factory automation, etc.)
If you were invited to write a white paper or give a presentation at the IPC APEX EXPO, what would your chosen topic be?
Do you currently sell a product, offer a service, or provide consulting? Please briefly describe your commercial offerings or capabilities.
What exactly are you hoping to get from this community group? (e.g., networking, finding clients, tracking industry trends, collaboration?)
To add a personal touch, what are your favorite hobbies, passions, or things you love to do outside of work?
What tone would you prefer for your final introduction? (e.g., highly professional, casual and warm, or bold and energetic?)"
